SS 2012 Data Tools to Manage SS 2005?

  • I just installed the Sql Server 2012 Client and Data tools on a term server in the hopes that we could use them to manage our Sql Server 2005 servers. Mgt Studio seems to work well with those. However, using Sql Server 2012 Data Tools, will we able to

    1) modify existing 2005 SSIS packages and resave them to our 2005 Sql Servers (Integration Services)?

    2) create new SSIS packages and save them to our 2005 SQL Servers w/ Integration Services?

Hopefully the answer is 'yes' to the above and, if so, if you have links on the right way to do this, let me know. For example, I am wondering if you have to upgrade all the packages, etc.

  • 1) No

    2) No

You need BIDS 2005 to edit and save SSIS 2005 packages, BIDS 2008 for 2008 packages and SSDT 2010/2012 for SSIS 2012 packages.

Okay. Well, this on a term server and I found that I could not keep any 2005/2008 client tools that were on there so I uninstalled them and then added 2012 client/data tools.

Can I add back in the 2005 or maybe 2008 client tools and BIDs so that we can manage our 2005 servers and, once they come online, our 2012 servers?

  • You can always install the 2005 and 2008 clients to manage their respective servers.

    They can operate side-by-side.

Although at the end I would just use the 2012 SSMS to manage everything.

But how? We don't have any 2012 Sql Servers yet. So I can't use 2012 Data Tools to handle my 2005 SSIS packages from all I understand. Or am I missing something?

I was talking about SSMS: SQL Server Management Studio to manage servers.

For SSIS, you can only use the BIDS environment from the corresponding version.
