SSMS connection to SQL Server 2008 R2 Express fails

    I have SSMS (SQL Server 2008 R2) installed on my workstation. I installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on my workstation yesterday (database engine only). After some modest steps Configuration manager shows the server and browser running. Protocols TCP/IP, Named Pipes and Shared Memory are all enabled.

    I attemtpted to register the server to SSMS however it fails to connect.

    My question - can you configure SSMS to connect to an Express database? If so, what am I doing wrong? Any URLs / comments would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi bobba,

    What error do you get? Are you connecting to machinename\sqlexpress rather than just machinename?

    Got it. Basically when the connect to server window came up I was replacing "local" with server name. My last effort I entered local\servername and up it came. Sorry about this but I needed this up quickly...
