Strange character stripping when concatenating

This code concats two strings, one that is 4000 chars and one that is 4025 chars.

If I put a N in place, i get correct result, but without N the script returns 8000 as length. Why?

The funny thing, If i just take LEN('12345...') it returns correct result for both cases. Also the query plan CONVERT-ion is the same for both versions.

I think that is reserved blob space. That is to say that it gets handled differently after it excedes 8000 characters.

When copying'n'pasting the this last result into word, I found a whole lot of carriage returns.

SELECT LEN(REPLACE(@SQL, '1234567890',''))



SELECT LEN(REPLACE(@SQL, 'a',''))

SELECT LEN(REPLACE(REPLACE(@SQL, '1234567890', ''), 'a',''))

Of course there will be carriage returns at the end of each line of numbers.

Try this:

SELECT LEN(REPLACE(REPLACE(@SQL, CHAR(10), ''), CHAR(13), ''))

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
