What is this American thing with offices and status? I really don't understand it. I've spent equal amounts of work time with an office and in open-plan (and much less time in cubicles) and there was absolutely no correlation between my job status and what working accomodation I had.

That's a good question, and I'm not sure of the answer myself. Here's my take.
Here in America, there seems to be this culture that correlates an "office" with prestige. If you have an office, you must be important. In my personal experience, in most office environments, middle management on up had offices, while the "underlings" had open desks or cubicles.
FWIW, I got an office (which, BTW, I share with my work partner) mainly due to (1) space and (2) privacy issues. We were short on space in IT, and needed to open up some more desks. Also, our CTO wanted us in a quieter, more secluded environment where we could be segregated from the craziness in the centralized IT environment; his feeling was that we could operate much better if we had our own space.
Personally, I don't consider myself any more "important" than my other IT colleagues, but it's nice to be able to have my own sense of space.

It's not a prestige thing for me. It's a "be nice to have a door to shut when people are having an impromptu conference right outside your workspace (at the top of their lungs)" thing.
Unfortunately, I am stuck in cubeland and must deal with the noise. Though I have threatened a couple of times to go outside, remoting in from the patio downstairs, if it keeps happening while I'm in the middle of major projects.

Where I work, everyone sits in a cubicle environment....executives and grunts allike. The only office is a shared office for HR for privacy.
