Unable to start the mssql service

  • Hello,

When trying to start the MSSQL SERVICE it fails with the following error:

MSSQL$HOUSE service on LocalComputer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do,for example, the Performance Logs and Alerts Service

It was a perfectly running system.  This has started all of a sudden.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    SK

  • I guess your SQL Server has "no more work to do", go home, retire...

I know you've tried to cold restart the PC, right?

Did you install any new soft/hardware? Getting to "is there enough memory left to even attempt to start the SQL service? or has this affected the PC adversely somehow?"

What if any System Log errors are you getting after start failure?

Try: Note the Date Time stamp of the database's, and files in the MS SQL Server dir structure, then try to start the service, then after start failure, what files noted above, have changed date time stamps. There is also a Logs made by SQL when it starts, usually located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\LOG. Can you see something there? Maybe compare a "good" working log to the newest etc.

Once you understand the BITs, all the pieces come together

  • Has the account that runs SQL recently had a password change or become locked out?

  • Check the account first, failing that, what events are recorded in the event logs? Look for Service Control Manager events.
