upgrade from 2008 sp1 to 2008 r2?

  • hi, i just don't get the difference between a sql 2008 sp1 (build 2531) and a new sql 2008 r2 (build 1600).

    1) is the 2008 sp1 better than the 2008 r2? wich one is the most "patched" or "updated".

    2) if i have a sql server 2008 sp1, do i have to "upgrade" it to 2008 r2? When i try it the "upgrade from sql 2000 or sql 2005 to sql 2008" option doesn't display the current 2008 sp1 instance.

    any help is welcome.

    thanks!!!

  • (1) The newest version is always going to be the most "Patched/updated". There are a TON of new features in SQL 2008 R2. Just check out this site: What's New

    (2) Yes it would be an upgrade. This is the matrix for the support upgrade paths: Paths. You might also review the information on upgrading here

  • Do note that R2 is not a patch or service pack. It's a new version of SQL that you will have to purchase licences for if you want to use.
