What is the difference between an element and an attribute?

    When creating an xml schema what is the difference between an element and an attribute?

    Which should I use to define (represent?) various columns where data will be stored?

    Forgive me if this doesn't make much sense.  I don't seem to have a good background for learning XML and am doing the best I can with something that doesn't work the way I am used to things working.

    Thanks!  When I put that site into my browser I found that I had already been to the site and had started the tutorial, however I didn't finish it.  This time I noticed links for elements and attributes and clicked on them.
