What traits does an SQL Server Developer need?

  • Hi, I'm new to SQL server. I'd like some opinions on what people think makes for a strong SQL Server Developer. Specifically what traits and skill sets are necessary or desirable to succeed in this business?

    1. Be able to convert business logic to code.

    2. Know when the requirements are wrong and have the hair to go back to the business users for clarification and possible alternatives.

    3. Be able to write code that runs really fast using the fewest resources possible and in a scalable fashion.

    4. Have a solid understanding of indexes and the like.

    5. Document your code in the code.

    6. Learn "set based" programming instead of "RBAR".

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.
"Change is inevitable... change for the better is not".
