XP SP2 Firewall!?

    Hi all,

    I have SQL Server 2000 sp3 installed on XP Pro. My colleague connects to the database using Excel (SQL Server ODBC).

    When I installed XP Pro SP2 (silly me) he could no longer connect to my database.

    After research I found posts in the Microsoft Knowledge Base explaining that it was the new firewall and there were certain options I had to change.

    I changed all the options (and more besides) and still it is impossible to connect to my database.

    I finally shutdown the firewall all together, and I still have the same problem!

    Here is the error message (in French, I'm in France, translation in italics)

    Echec lors de la connexion :  Connection failed

    Etat SQL : '01000'  SQL state

    Erreur SQL Server : 10061 Error

    [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).

    Echec lors de la connexion :

    Etat SQL : '08001'

    Erreur SQL Server : 17

    [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Ce serveur n'existe pas ou son accès est refusé.

    This server does not exist or access was denied.

    Oh Bill, what have you done?

    Any ideas please?

    Has anyone figured out how to configure the firewall?

    Don't forget to check your client network utility (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cliconfg.exe) to make certain the installation of SP2 didn't disable the network protocols.  At least TCP/IP should be opened and I'd open Named Pipes as well.

    Frank,

    I had already found your site and I have not been able to get the connection working.

    My firewall exceptions are ports TCP 1377 and UDF 1434 and sqlservr.exe.

    Perhaps I need to add something to the advanced settings?

    I checked cliconfg.exe and I have TCP/IP and named pipes selected.

    Still cannot connect.

    Sorry, besides the links I can't help you with this. Here we are not allowed to install XP SP2. Another option might be to search the Google groups. I have seen this question there quite frequently. So your chances are good to find the answer there.
