Be wary of column level encryption. It sounds like a great idea but is miserable on performance. I also know that it is very difficult and potentially impossible to create an index on an encrypted column.

Good idea, but it should be cost effective. Micro$oft licenses is expensive, and since the DB doesn't really demand lots of processors it's no problem running 50+ databases on a dual Xeon CPU/4GB RAM. Most of if is stored procedures - so MSSQL is a must.Anybody with experience in SQL Relay?
