Why do you want to shrink the file? Such a file needs to grow again when necessary. And that is a somewhat expensive operation which leads to file fragmentation and might degrade performance. I would leave the file size as it is.

I find that if I get the blank after submit that if I hit the back button and then submit it will work. I'm using Opera.Note that I at least copy it to the clipboard just in case. I've been burned on it too.

How many logins are there on the server - a lot or a few. Doers it always happen to the same database. If so the is it one of the last ones created. I suspect that the large number of databases on this server is causing the issue. Is there any login timeout period set?
