RE: The CLR in SQL Server 2005

  • Reply

Your arguement is certainly valid, but there are some very good reasons to abstract your middle tier from your database.  First one that jumps out is how poorly TSQL organizes logic.  Since TSQL isn't an object based language, encapsulation and reuse make building a good business layer difficult.  This does change with CLR in the […]

RE: Transaction log backups causing application to hang?

  • Reply

I agree - I have a hard time imagining that 15 minute backups of a tlog are unusual.  However there does seem to be a direct correlation between the increase in frequency and the increase in application 'hangs'.  Even more to the point, the times of the application hangs often correspond with the kickoff of […]

RE: Where to find out detail of when the Index is created and modified?

Colin is attempting to provide help. Questions are not always clear as to their intent, giving more information rather than less helps other to help you. Colin is just trying to get that information to be of greater assistance. Berating him for that is pointless and ridiculous.

RE: license

There is no performance difference HOWEVER, there are differences for how many concurrent connections there are.  PER SEAT = n Connections (basically HIGH LEVEL concept), PER PROCESSOR = n CPUs and INFINITE connections (Again HIGH LEVEL concept).  The amount of connections is firmly dependent on system resources (but that is for a different topic).....The internal […]

RE: Hosting Microsoft SQL Server

  • Reply

Good idea, but it should be cost effective. Micro$oft licenses is expensive, and since the DB doesn't really demand lots of processors it's no problem running 50+ databases on a dual Xeon CPU/4GB RAM. Most of if is stored procedures - so MSSQL is a must.Anybody with experience in SQL Relay?

RE: Report counts on ranges

This is another way to do it assuming you have a table of ranges and descriptions of ranges.First example displays the ranges.  Second example displays range names.SELECT     dbo.MyRanges.LowValue, dbo.MyRanges.HighValue, COUNT(*) AS Expr1 FROM         dbo.MyRanges CROSS JOIN                       dbo.MyData WHERE     (dbo.myData.Valuefield BETWEEN dbo.MyRanges.LowValue AND                       dbo.MyRanges.HighValue) GROUP BY dbo.MyRanges.LowValue, dbo.MyRanges.HighValue SELECT     COUNT(*) AS Expr1, dbo.MyRanges.RangeName FROM         […]

Congrats, Frank. And I don't think Steve, Andy, or Brian Knight are going to lock this thread just yet so you can receive the praise you so richly deserve. Age is indeed relative. One of my older math professors taught me this as he continually whipped us young whipper-snappers in class after class. Ah, the […]
