Thanks for the link to that Gail, everyone in the office was wondering if I was dying slowly as I'm trying not to laugh aloud in my very quiet office today.

Also, was that Grant in a Chuck Norris t-shirt?

    Yup. That was the ScaryDBA.

After seeing his lightning talk I knew why his nick name is Scary DBA

Ouch... sorry didn't mean to rub it in. I'm just excited. This is the first official SQL training I've had ever. Everything I've done since 1998 for SQL was has been self paced, trial by error, find free stuff, forum reading, article reading and read lots of books.

Oh believe me - I know how that kind of training goes ;-);-)

  • Well, this year I got to miss PASS because I spent the last two weeks migrating some database servers from one datacenter to another three times.

Tonight, I'm again up all night (third time in two weeks). Why? Because the SAN on the servers we migrated to is throwing NTFS errors and losing files. Which, by some weird coincidence, is the reason the first attempted migration had to be rolled back and tried again (the failed second attempt was some problem with a load ballancer for the web servers; apparently, the hosting company hadn't tested any of that equipment before trying to take it live, and that just didn't work out right).

How confident am I that tonight's work will solve the problem? Well, I just got an alert from the server that one of the "brand new LUNs we're moving the data over to in order to take it off the LUN that keeps having problems" failed due to ... drum roll please ... an NTFS error.

Bets are being taken and a pool formed on how many more nights I'll get to miss sleep because our server hosting company seems to be holding "open server month". (It's kind of like "open mike night" at a comedy club.)

I am SO looking forward to when our contract expires with these people.

That was indeed a great lightning talk, that deserves to go on Youtube and as a ref for many threads on db-related fora.

Most likely the case. I don't think I'd take too much issue with an occasional self-promotion there but would want to see him contribute more on the forums in order to do that.
