Anyone have an idea if this post http://qa.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/FindPost1191243.aspx is spam? (Afraid to click the link that is in that linked post...)

It's ok... he's been here before and has apparently changed his login. Why he changed his login? Dunno... he might have gotten black balled by site managers for spamming his stuff. But clicking on his URL won't hurt ya. I've been there before.

Most likely the case. I don't think I'd take too much issue with an occasional self-promotion there but would want to see him contribute more on the forums in order to do that.

He'd be better off being an active member and having the link in his sig. I'm much more likely to click a link from the sig of a name on here that I've seen a lot of good posts from.

Agreed. I see it as just spam when done the way he has done it.

Thanks for the link to that Gail, everyone in the office was wondering if I was dying slowly as I'm trying not to laugh aloud in my very quiet office today.

Also, was that Grant in a Chuck Norris t-shirt?

    Yup. That was the ScaryDBA.

After seeing his lightning talk I knew why his nick name is Scary DBA

That was indeed a great lightning talk, that deserves to go on Youtube and as a ref for many threads on db-related fora.

    Good job, Grant !

Thanks. It was fun. I knew the Threadizens would like it.

Well, this year I got to miss PASS because I spent the last two weeks migrating some database servers from one datacenter to another three times.

Tonight, I'm again up all night (third time in two weeks). Why? Because the SAN on the servers we migrated to is throwing NTFS errors and losing files. Which, by some weird coincidence, is the reason the first attempted migration had to be rolled back and tried again (the failed second attempt was some problem with a load ballancer for the web servers; apparently, the hosting company hadn't tested any of that equipment before trying to take it live, and that just didn't work out right).

How confident am I that tonight's work will solve the problem? Well, I just got an alert from the server that one of the "brand new LUNs we're moving the data over to in order to take it off the LUN that keeps having problems" failed due to ... drum roll please ... an NTFS error.

Bets are being taken and a pool formed on how many more nights I'll get to miss sleep because our server hosting company seems to be holding "open server month". (It's kind of like "open mike night" at a comedy club.)

I am SO looking forward to when our contract expires with these people.

We've been fighting some SAN issues lately ourselves.

Not any fun, and at least for now, it is in house and vendor is local.

    That will soon change though.

Oh, and Gail, in case you don't see this tweet from SirSQL:

@GFritchey @SQLintheWild I used what I learned in your precon to fix an outage situation caused by a lazy spool. Instant ROI. Thanks!

    Whoop!

I saw. :w00t::hehe::w00t::-D Caught in AMS in short layover. Awesome, wow, perfect!

It's OK. Not sure about the quality, but it's valid to link to a relevant resource.

  • FYI, not sure if you saw it, or can see it, but Dr. Dewitt's talk on Big Data and Hadoop is great: http://www.sqlpass.org/summit/2011/Live/LiveStreaming/LiveStreamingFriday.aspx

  • Just an FYI, since many of you post often, this thread is a little inappropriate in terms of responses to the poster. I know he's a troll, or lazy, or any number of things, but a response or two is fine. Joking about his name, or piling on with more comments doesn't help anyone and it looks like a high school cheerleaders' attempt to freeze someone out.

I pretty much started it and you are right. It was unprofessional. I have removed my comment and apologized to the poster.

It wasn't aimed specifically at you, but rather in general. We've all done it, or most of us, including me.

Just remember we volunteer to help, not bully people. One comment makes sense, maybe two, but 4 or 5 are a little out of hand.

I pretty much started it and you are right. It was unprofessional.

That said, it was a little ironic, and it's something I keep seeing here, twitter and SQLTeam. People with handles that imply their skills are way above what they appear to be from their questions/comments.

People wanting to appear better than they are? The old 'you don't know that you're unskilled' problem? What leads someone to pick a handle such as 'SQLServerMaster' (which I have seen) or to have sig lines that imply they're the absolute go-to resource for certain problems when they're not?

The one you referenced in here a day or two ago comes to mind also.
