Most annoying 'feature' of the day

  • lol no im not sure - I don't have a copy of the oxford english dictionary to hand (and the online versions all contain american english) but it just looks like one of those made up words that have been absorbed into modern language.

we definitely dont say yours truly though !

  • Yes, we don't say "Yours truly", but there is such a word - it means much the same as "really", as opposed to "truthfully" which means "in truth".

Anyway, annoying features. How about in Visual Studio, when you copy an Integration Services task. No matter where you attempt to paste it, it always appears way off to the bottom left, meaning that you then have to resize the container it's in.

Also, Intellisense - why doesn't it recognise synonyms for tables?

  • Thanks John - I am now adequately educated 😉

ssshhhhhh! dont suggest new features for intelinonsense! someone at microsoft might be listening! 😉

+3 (or 4) on Word. I tend to write in One Note or Edit Plus, and I'll drop into Word for spell/grammar checks, but the autocorrect stuff almost has me putting a fist through the monito some days.

You can turn off AutoCorrect in the Options menu. That's also where the list of autocorrect words lives, so the poster who needs HDA can make the change in that list, and fix that problem.

Actually, it doesn't fix that. Try it. I have. (I actually mentioned trying that exact thing in the post where I mentioned the problem. Did you miss that part?)

Coding has wrecked my typing skills to an extent that autocorrect is more useful than not, but it needs to allow overrides that actually override, even on the common ones they must have hard-coded into it. (I used to type 120 CWPM, on a typewriter, but writing code has completely ruined that. I'm down to something like 60 or 80 WPM, with autocorrect, and 40-60 without. And about 5 if I use a standard keyboard - I'm totally spoiled by ergo keyboards these days.)

Removing hda from the list works for me in Word 2010 and in Word 2003. I just tested it in both. In 2003, go to Tools->Auto Correct Options to find the list. This is totally separate from the dictionaries. In 2010, go to the File tab, then options, then Proofing then Auto Correct to find the list. Enter hda in the box, or find it in the long list, then click on Delete. I don't have a way to post a picture, or I would put up a screen shot.

  • My biggest hate is the word grammar checker - I have bo desire to write using American grammar (which I find perverse in places) instead of Scottish, but I want to do a grammar check - and there appears to be no way of asking for any kind of UK English grammar instead of US. Also, it won't do UK English spelling - or rather I've been unable to find any UK english dictionary for Word, and that's my second biggest hate. The third is word's multi-language incapability: even when it autodetects which language I'm typing in it often doesn't switch say from the US English dictionary to the French dictionary when it detects the language is French, I have to make that switch by hand. ANd as for socuments with bits in several languages - it's hopeless. And of course the language I type second most of is not supported at all.

The other great hate is intellisense - something that could have been done well but was actually done extremely badly. I liked "intellinonsense" when I read that name here - it's a perfect fit.
