I don't believe so. Would be very surprised if you could.
Edit: Also the comment about the precon DVDs should have read 'if you've registered for a precon you can then buy the DVD of all the precon sessions'

I'm sure you all have similar breakdowns but 10K of spent cash $ lost income is not really an option this year.

I'll be in this one. And looking forward to it! I'm going to this one live, and buying the precons to the the Ozar one later.
As a tip: I would love to actually practice on my lappy in the class. Kind of a "do like I'm doing" sort of thing. Not for everything, but for some areas. This could be best done as regards fixing the issue, not just pointing the issue out. I think people will really feel like they can do it when they leave after 'fixing and tuning' their own AdventureWorks (or other) database.
I think this format will have TONS of value-adds thst other presentations lack. It engages the mind differently, keeps attention since it is not just more slides or a demo of us watching you fix your own system, etc. Perhaps you and grant might find an opportunity to walk the class to see how folks are doing with this little self-lab part.
I got it, after teaching various points, stats io, a handful of icons, etc., then provide a query and the need for the class to figure out how to solve it. An early 'lab' might be simply reading the plan to find a column to Include. Walk the class to see how folks are solving it and help out. Then show/walk the proper answer.
Then more slides, a demo of sorts, slides and another demo, then a lab about that. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Toward the last 2h of the day, the labs should be harder and combine issues, so that the class is not just looking for a narrow solution because you just covered it.
Although this may not be very traditional, I think it reinforces the learning concept of: "I'd rather know a few points very, very well, then know of a ton of concepts, but be unable to practically use many of them".
This, would be completely and thoroughly awesome!

All joking aside, I'd love to see you win this one.I never did read what the winner would be awarded before the folks at work nominated me. I read it about 5 minutes ago. OMG! Admission to PASS, 4 days hotel coverage, and $300 bucks towards air fare and a totally awesome Red-Gate software package (with 3 years of help-support, no less!) to help make day-to-day life a whole lot easier!
I went to PASS last year and missed out on a lot because they asked me to put together a 2nd presentation about a day before I flew to Seattle. I spent most of my time hunched over my laptop and missed things like the SQL Server Casino Night which also means I missed meeting a lot of the people I wanted to meet. I understand that Gail Shaw will be co-presenting with you and she couldn't make it last year. Winning would mean that I finally get to check meeting her in person off of my "bucket list" AND I'd get to see you again!
Two of the things I really enjoyed at PASS 2010 were the "Ask an expert" sessions and the "Birds of a feather" lunch. I got to meet and help lot's of folks at those. I'd love to do that again. That was even more thrilling than being a presenter.
I have to echo your words, Grant... Please help "Santa" and the dust bunnies get to PASS 2011! 🙂

Nice, probably. Practical, not really. It's a huge amount of work just to do slides and demos. To set up a full hands-on lab that works for various versions of SQL (or includes a virtual machine with SQL loaded) is just magnitudes more to do in our spare time in the next month.

The problem with labs is that some people are fast, some slow, some don't want to do them at all, some would rather learn now play later. No matter what, some will end up sitting bored.
If anything, I'd lean the way PR/KT did for the immersion course. No time given for labs in class, but labs are available that can be done in the student's spare time after the course, if they want.

What's the level of the material you'll be covering? I'm interested but not if you stay in the 100-200 level most of the day... I might get more by fully reading Grant's book.
Aiming for 300 with the occasional dive down deeper. If you prefer the book that's fine.
