Are the posted questions getting worse?

Actually sounded like some of the deconstructionist stuff I used to have to read in film school. Lots of words, doesn't say much.

Mmm. "Indisputable validity... I don't know why it's indisputable, but it is!" The old "take my word for it" argument, except he even manages to back out of that!

So yes, I think you might be on to something. Perhaps there's been a down turn in the movie review business, and now they are turning to technical writing? Whether or not it's true is anyone's guess. So let's just take it as indisputable!

  • Bob, did you notice? We should hit 3500 posts soon!

I'm not going to get all excited again until we are approaching 5K 🙂

I've been trying to do more answering and less blabbering. :Whistling:

I wonder when this thread will have more posts than me?

Steve: Resistance is futile. All will be assimilated.

Hey get some rest Barry! Like the first part of your article, this is the calm before the storm.

Great article btw. Make it look easy, draw the punters in all wide-eyed...

I posted a simplified explanation of each. Hopefully it's neither too simplified nor not simplified enough. Hard to judge that sometimes in these cases.

I didn't want to confuse issues by asking "aren't there some ANSI standards around character sets and collations?"

If I'm not mistaken, ASCII and Unicode are both ANSI standards, but I didn't want to add that level of complexity to the explanation.

  • IIRC, ASCII was originally a separate standards organization (probably sponsored by the federal government) , that was later subsumed by ANSI. It may very well have been the first computer standard that ANSI took over. I beleive the ANSI pre-existed that event by quite some time as it was involved in a lot of other materials, manufacturing and engineering standards.

  • Barry, ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. It was a standard promulgated by the American Standards Association, which was a predecessor organization to ANSI.

219 posts on Barry's article thread currently. That's sort of a light snack for The Thread.
