Is it just me, or does a term like 'That can be done, but people usually learn better' rankle when applied to something you've said?

    Feels a little condescending.

I've said "That can be done, but..." many times so just checking... it wasn't me in one of my coffee depraved states, was it?

    No, wasn't you.

Don't recall ever seeing you use that kind of condescending comment before.

On the other hand, I do make that kind of comment occassionally. But not to you. People have to go out of their way to earn insults and disrespect from me. Takes hard work and long hours.

Have you seen the new tech they have that stops a saw blade if your finger or hand or other part gets in the way?

The company is call SawStop. The technology is totally cool and their saws are actually incredibly well made. They actually petitioned the US government that all saws manufactured or sold in the US should have some sort of similar safety mechanism. Talk about a lawyer getting greedy. While I do think the technology is cool I find it very distasteful that they would actually consider making it a law that basically assures them a monopoly on the safety mechanisms.

I know one person who actually managed to test out one of these saws on accident. He stumbled and put his hand on the table to catch his fall, right on the blade. He had a fairly big scratch that did not even require stitches. If he had fallen on my table saw he would have lost half of his hand.

I guess you can tell I am a woodworker...I have been drooling over getting one of their cabinet saws for several years. Unfortunately my wife has yet to concede to the high price tag. Oh well I will keep pushing...and hopefully with all 10 fingers still attached. πŸ˜‰

I'd be fine with it being a law if they give up the patent. Like that'll ever happen. Good luck getting one!

My resume includes Oracle from working at Honeywell, also mentions DBA due to SQL Server. I get emails/calls for Senior Oracle DBA positions. How does 1 year of Oracle development and 14+ years of SQL Server DBA/Developer experience qualify me as a Senior Oracle DBA?

I dunno. How old are you again? Do you pay the "senior" rate for a cup of coffee? (and should I hide in fear now?)

Lynn, admit it. You have at least 10 years worth of SQL 2012 experience. That's got to count for something. Right?

Oh, the pain. Oh, the A-Go-Knee! See me suffer!

Now I must go off and write about my tortured existence. Assuming they let me out of this cage they call a cubicle. Oh, the pain! Oh, the A-Go-Knee!

Second statement first, no, haven't even had the chance to play with it yet.

First statement, you don't know how close to being right you are. I do get to call myself an old man now that I am officially a grandfather.

How would you all like to design the system (and database) around this one: http://www.cnn.com/2012/03/26/opinion/frum-identity-cards/index.html?hpt=hp_bn7

It would be quite fun, wouldn't it.

Two nightmare aspects: security (for example making it so that all those scanners than can only read the appropriate information and nothing else actually work; but database security would be quite fun too) and identity (in database terms, finding a valid natural key) - after all, the "can this person vote check" must identify the person so that a record can be made that this person has already boted in this poll, so either that identity is on the face of the card or those scanners can read and display it (or pass it on to some recording device). For natural identity, DoB plus name won't cut it - there will be duplicates - so what else? Security is complicated by one of two factors: either there's one central database of everything (which is never going to be secure) or lots of partial databases (voter databases, driving license databases, various benefit eligibility databases, and so on ad nauseam), but these partial databases now share a common natural key so cross database joins can be done unless each individual databases is secure - and probably each database is owned by a different agency (52 agencies for civilian driving licenses to start with) so getting them all to be secure is probably impossible.

This sort of identity card with its associated database(s) is much beloved by far-right statist syndicalists (like many republicans) and far left statist socialists (like many democrats) (or, to take it to the UK, like far left statist socialists like some Liberal Democrats and some Labour Party or far right statist syndicalists like some Liberal Democrats and some Conservatives). In other words, the sort of thing advocated by politicians of the (almost totalitarian) ideological stripes I despise. So it would be enormously gratifying to control the design because that would enable me to ensure that it never got delivered in workable form.

    Tom
