There is no need to have both installed. I use SSMS for SQL 2008 to administer SQL2K, SQL2K5 and SQL2K8 servers all from my own machine.

One thing I always recommend on this kind of hierarchy, is have a "TopNodeID" type column. All levels in the same hierarchy have the same entry in that column....
